Brentwood Arts Exchange in Brentwood Maryland is a local arts center run by the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission. We will meet Tuesdays from 6pm-8:30pm. The class will start on Sept 12 and run through October 31. The class will cover basic jewelry making skills such as soldering, filing, forming, and finishing processes. This is a great class if you have been doing beading as a hobby and are looking for more metalsmithing skills.
Students learn to transform sheet copper into hollow forms using the same techniques that Paul Revere used. Participants are also introduced to the art of repousse--an ancient technique of working metal from both sides to create a bas relief sculptural surface. Emphasis is on using various types of hammers, steel forms, chasing and repousse tools, and soldering methods as students explore metalsmithing techniques that change metal into detailed jewelry, vessels, or small sculptures.
This class meets Fridays from 9:30am to 12:30am.
Blacksmithing for Silversmiths at the Artleague This class runs for two days, the weekend of June 6th and 11th, from 10am to 4pm.
Learn to make your own tools. Mushroom, blowhorn, anticlastic, and raising stakes can be made, as well as chasing tools and a stonesetting jig. If participants complete one blowhorn stake and one mushroom stake, the cost of the class is far less than the retail cost of those two stakes. Cutting, forming, welding, grinding, sanding, and polishing techniques are demonstrated. Prior jewelry or silversmithing experience is required. Welders, grinders, and other large power tools are used. This workshop is physically demanding and also requires reasonably good eyesight and depth perception. A materials fee is payable to the instructor, approximately $70, but varies depending on the material used. Registered students should contact the instructor at least one week prior to class to discuss individual material needs.
Sadly, my father passed away on March 6. His funeral will be March 31 and April 1. This workshop has been cancelled, but will hopefully be rescheduled. I was really looking forward to this!
